Soak Up Nature With Outdoor Baths

Why is it that we love outdoor showers much? Can it be the little exhibitionist in us all which gets a thrill out of being nude outside? Can it be that the heat (or cold) air on our skin? Is it the romance? Whatever it is, the outdoor shower has become an icon of the good life. Taking a shower in the great outdoors is sort of like being on permanent vacation.

And then there’s the outdoor tub, which is just straight-up sexy. Luxuriating in a tub of warm water beneath the stars? The ideal. In my mind it is better than the standard hot tub — no chlorine, also you’re able to use shampoo.

Here are 14 examples of the bathing good life.

A bathtub with a view. It’s also covered — imagine yourself immersed in hot water on a cold and rainy night, the branches dripping all around you.

John Lum Architecture, Inc.. AIA

A shower and tub combo in its own small (well, not so little actually) outdoor room, complete with windows, tile plus a ceiling of tree branches.

Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture

Outstanding in its field! I would float a number of the rosemary in the water for nature’s own aromatherapy. Oh, also, there appears to be a dragon in the tub. Hope you don’t mind.

The best of both worlds: the indoor-outdoor tub. A view, fresh air, a little sunshine. Or you may close the doors and observe the expanse of nature all around you.

Saint Dizier Design

Another indoor-outdoor example, this time using a gorgeous copper tub onto a bed of river stones.

Debora carl landscape layout

I love the modern, casual look of the corrugated metal walls and the cement floor. It is unfussy, but it looks finished.

Kathryn Shaffer Architect

This outdoor shower is indicated by nothing more than a tile arch. When there’s plumbing nearby, this would be a fairly simple project (not for me, but for somebody handy and patient).

MCM Design

The outdoor claw-foot tub is indeed romantic.

Restyled Home

This poolside bath reminds me of the little beach cabanas in Europe. It is somewhat closed in, but you do get to shower in privacy (no issues for possibly being caught naked).

Crisp Architects

This bath with a separate dressing area is the complete monty. In hot climates this may function as the only shower.

Slifer Designs

It would be a true pity to live in Hawaii and not have some sort of outdoor bathing setup. This one has an indoor tub and an outdoor shower surrounded by a sunken rock wall. Privacy, luxury and tropical breezes.

Phil Kean Designs

Brilliant human-and-dog shower combo (except if the dogs escape while sterile and make a break through the dog door). I love the white, clean corner. Simple and modern.

Samuel H. Williamson Associates

A shimmering green tile wall is both bathroomy and gardeny. It is almost like a piece of artwork.

Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture

The old standard. Simple, no-nonsense and important points for being-caught-naked possible.
